 About Steve Leeds

For the last five years, Steve Leeds has facilitated interactive group drumming events, employing authentic African hand drums and percussion instruments, for groups of 20 to 200 people, from schoolchildren to senior citizens, educating and informing them about the power of drumming.

Steve came to group drumming after his own personal battle, in 1999, with Hairy Cell Leukemia. As a participant in a Music Therapy program sponsored by The Recording Academy, in which two hundred people engaged in a drum circle, he experienced first hand, the power of the drum as a healing tool that connects the mind, body and spirit.

“I would not be here,” says Steve, “if it were not for people like Remo Belli, Christine Stevens, Dr. Barry Bittman and Arthur Hull.” From them, Steve realized that he has important knowledge to share and he remarks, “I would be ripping people off by not sharing this transformational tool with them.” Steve believes that by sharing his passion for percussion and his gift of rhythm, he can turn on people’s light bulbs and even change a person’s life for the better. He has seen the value of group drumming go beyond the beat of the group to “infect” people with positive energy.

Originally trained as a jazz saxophonist, Steve worked with some of the world’s outstanding musicians and composers in the recording studios of Hollywood including artists such as Boz Scaggs, Sonny & Cher, Seals & Crofts and Jan & Dean, to name a few. His experience as a Bilingual Cross-Cultural educator for the Los Angeles Unified School District intensifies his ability to impart his message of the benefits of group drumming. Steve is also a trained HealthRythms™ facilitator, and works with REMO Inc. and its staff to bring group drumming into the spotlight as a useful means for change.

Steve is a powerful presenter and an excellent program designer who produces interactive group drumming activities that promise to reach out from his heart to the spirit of the impacted teenagers who look to Hollywood Arts for solutions to the social and emotional problems of homelessness, empowerment and lack of group identity.
